"Blogette Playlist
Volume 10: Mom's Music"

POSTED BY MEGHAN
ON 03.20.08 9:03 AM

As a followup to yesterday's "10 Things You Don't Know About My Mom," here's a playlist she created just for the Blogette. It's a good mix of some classics and contemporary selections that may surprise some of you. And if anyone has ever wondered how brave my mom really is, you now have your answer. Do you know anyone else who will admit to having DeBarge on their playlist? Long live the 80's... I guess. Just kidding!

"10 Things You Don't Know About My Mom"
POSTED BY MEGHAN
ON 03.18.08 7:20 PM

Hi everyone,

Thanks for being so patient during our downtime while Dad is traveling in Iraq and we're off the campaign trail. I am currently resting and hanging out in Phoenix with friends who I've been neglecting. Anyone looking for a great, relaxing vacation should seriously consider visiting Phoenix and Scottsdale. The desert is an amazing place to recharge your batteries.  Heather, Shannon and I leave for London soon and head to the Balkans to join up with my mom to observe the wonderful work of the HALO organization. I couldn't be more excited to be taking part in this incredible trip.

Also, since many people have asked me for some details about my mom, I've whipped up a quick list of ten things you might not know about her.

10 Things You Don't Know
About My Mom:

  1. She was named "rodeo queen" in high school. Back in the day, rodeos were a big thing in Arizona and Mom was named the rodeo queen when she was 16. The pictures are so funny – she's wearing a cowboy hat with a crown!

  2. She always taught me to be true to myself. Growing up in politics, it would be easy to think of your parents forcing you to act, talk, and look a certain way.  But whether it was me putting pink streaks in my hair when I was 14 or deciding to go to Columbia instead of USC (her alma mater) for college, Mom always let me make my own decisions (and mistakes) and it has made me who I am today.

  3. She's a huge Cream fan and went to their reunion concert in London two years ago.

  4. Her favorite snacks are Cheetos and salt and vinegar potato chips.

  5. She likes to watch nature programs and "The Animal Planet" on TV.  (I think she's slightly obsessed with Jeff Corwin.)

  6. She spoils our dogs silly. We have two Yorkshire terriers named Desi and Lucy. We also have two other dogs named Sam and Coco who are a springer spaniel and a mix. She spoils them with lots of treats and affection.

  7. She also loves fish.  I grew up with salt water tanks all over our house and bowls of goldfish in the kitchen.

  8. She has been doing work with charities such as HALO and Operation Smile ever since I can remember. When I was little, I used to imagine her running into people like "Indiana Jones" along the way.  To this day, when I see an old movie poster of Harrison Ford as "Indiana Jones", it reminds me of Mom.

  9. She can tell if a beer is fresh or not, depending on the taste.

  10. The song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is our special "mother/daughter song".  It always makes me think of her and our family's affinity for scuba diving and the ocean.

"Blogette Playlist
Volume 9"

POSTED BY MEGHAN
ON 03.17.08 7:22 AM

Since we're off the trail this week, I thought I'd post another playlist (yes, they are endless). I have been called out by friends for not including Fred Astaire in my playlists. Listening to his music has been a guilty pleasure of mine since I was a child, and I used to torture my fabulous college roommate by playing it a bit too loud on Sundays. I've included some of my all-time favorites on this list, mixing it up with a little old and new. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is beyond good and, of course, I've included more Elliott Smith. (One my great disappointments is not ever seeing him perform live before he died.)  Also, Trini Lopez's version of "Besame Mucho" is one of the best versions I've ever heard. I hope everyone continues to enjoy the playlists.

"Night at The Plaza"
POSTED BY MEGHAN

Last night, Dad held a fundraiser at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. It was a lot of fun and the room was packed full of people. The event was held in a newly refurbished area of The Plaza. They have done an amazing job restoring glitz and glamour to the hotel. I am so happy to be back spending a little time in NYC. I've missed it! In the coming week, our new posts are going to be a little less frequent because Dad is leaving the campaign trail to travel to the Middle East and Europe with Senator Graham and the Blogettes and I will be traveling with Mom to the Balkans. It's a humanitarian trip to see the work being done by The HALO Trust, a global non-profit organization dedicated to removing land mines around the world (my mom's a board member). Although we normally only concentrate on the campaign trail, I think you'll enjoy seeing some of the other organizations my family is committed to serving. We'll be sure to keep you posted on the latest news. And finally, thanks again to everyone for all the wonderful comments over the last week. All of them have been greatly appreciated.

"Inner Beauty"
POSTED BY MEGHAN
ON 03.10.08 3:52 PM

As you may have noticed, I seldom use the Blogette as a medium to discuss social or political issues unless I feel particularly compelled to do so. This is one of those times. One of the unintended consequences of my dad becoming the presumptive Republican nominee is the increased level of public scrutiny on him and our family. Of course I expected more than my fair share when I decided to put myself out there and write a blog on the campaign; however, I've been surprised by critical comments regarding my weight and body shape.  It recently reached a ridiculous level when someone handed me a business card for a plastic surgeon and suggested I needed liposuction. I am proud of my curves and have always loved my fuller figure, as should every woman who is not a size "0".  I want to be a positive role model for my little sister and all of the other young women who read my blog and help perpetuate a more positive image for women, regardless of their body size. I feel empowered to tell everyone that it's important to maintain a healthy weight that works for them - not everyone is going to be model thin, nor should they expect to be. To every young girl reading this blog, it is inner beauty and happiness that makes a person beautiful, not a number on a scale.

I know that so many of you really enjoyed our photo gallery from the BBQ event in Sedona for members of the media. We think you're going to love this video. Watch for Dad being dangerous on the grill with his tongs, Mom's humor, us rocking out in the car and of course, all the unexpected silliness. Enjoy!

"Viewer Mail Volume 4"
POSTED BY MEGHAN
ON 03.08.08 8:02 AM

I've been catching up on messages over the weekend and we had more submissions these last two weeks than ever before on the site. Everyone has been just phenomenal. And we've also received some great suggestions that we'll be using to improve the site in the months ahead. I can't believe where some of you are writing from. I think we got our first comments from Norway. And please keep the song suggestions coming. Last but not least, thanks to everyone who sent in such heartfelt congratulatory comments this past week after the nomination was won. I know my Dad, Mom and entire family appreciate your thoughts and kind words.

A special treat for all those who loved the BBQ photos is coming... you'll love it!

Sunny from Berkeley, California writes:
...I'm totally addicted to reading your blog... I love it. I laugh out loud when I read about your adventures on the campaign trail... It's great to see the candid behind-the-scenes moments of your dad's campaign. More than anything you read in the news, you really put the person behind the face of John McCain. No matter what party line, I think getting more people interested in politics is a wonderful thing, and you are clearly doing that for so many people with your blog.

Nicole from Sheffield, Alabama wrote:
I have always wondered how I could mesh my love for politics and national events with my love for fashion and fun and still be taken seriously. You girls have shown me that it is very possible! Since I started reading the blog back when you first started, I have actually made meshing the two my sort of trademark. I have been going to interviews for summer internships and it's what makes me stand out! Thank you for showing me it wasn't an impossibility! It has really been an inspiration!

Gregg from Oak Hills, California wrote:
My wife and I are 63 years old and I wanted to tell you how much we've enjoyed your postings. Thought you might like to know some of us 'old folks' are out here following your blog. We especially like the pictures and feel like we're getting to know your family. ...as a Viet Nam vet I have tremendous respect for him. Keep up the good work.

Wendi from Knoxville, Tennessee writes:
This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. I really enjoy the pictures and comments. It makes me feel like I have a front row seat to all the campaign events. I've been a big fan of your dad for years and this will be the first time I've voted for a Republican for national office. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Elaine from Cardiff, United Kingdon writes:
I love your blog and I'm so happy to read that you're in it for the long haul right up until election day. It looks like you are having the craziest, busiest and best time of your life on the road - thank you for sharing it with us and I hope you continue to enjoy every minute.

Sonia from Seattle, Washington wrote:
Meghan, your blog is as addictive as Perez Hilton for me. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your hard work. ...you are definitely an inspiration to all us girls who love fashion but are intelligent as they come. Much love!

Zach from St. Albans, West Virginia writes:
I just wanted to say I love the blog and your playlists. Keep up the good work!

Evelyn from Grass Valley, California writes:
I LOVE your blog! I always get a kick out of reading it! ...keep up the good work, Meghan!

Janice from Gainesville, Florida wrote:
What a neat idea for a blog! I've been a fan of John McCain for years, but only now have I taken a little time to learn more about his family. Meghan, you and your friends seem to strike a great balance between whimsy and class - keep on having fun, and I look forward to reading and seeing more about you all on the campaign trail!

Kirsten from Gainesville, Florida writes:
Hey! I'm a political science major at the University of Florida. Every time I read your blog it makes me want to be traveling along with all of you campaigning! I am so excited about what is to come from your father! Congrats on the GOP nom... even though we already KNEW that he is the best man for the job! :)

Tom from Indianapolis, Indiana wrote:
Just discovered your website...very, very nice... even a 50-year old Republican like me can enjoy it... LOL... keep up the good work... your dad has my vote!

Trond from Stange, Norway writes:
Hi, warm greetings from a dedicated conservative and McCain-supporter in Norway! This blog is great and is now one of my regular "must read" political blogs. Your site adds an interesting "human touch" to the blogosphere and a unique "fly on the wall" behind the scenes kind of look in how campaigns are run, and how it affects the everyday life of the people right in the middle of it. Nicely done, important and innovative! Keep up the good work! You are truly a great family and John will make an outstanding President.

Ruth from Clemmons, North Carolina wrote:
Hi, Meghan and the Blogettes! CONGRATULATIONS to the straight-talkers on clinching the nomination tonight. The Politico article is correct: we all want to be Meghan's pals. Can't wait to hear your Dad's speech tonight. He's a champ and I'm looking forward to voting for him in November.

Julie from Columbus, Ohio writes:
I love your blog! It's great to see the campaign behind the scenes - I find your viewpoint so refreshing.

Kelly from Edmond, Oklahoma wrote:
Okay - I've already written once, but I just have to say a SECOND time... LOVE your blog, girls! Keep up the real, unabashed perspective. Seriously - as a university faculty member and researcher, reading the blog is just a nice little relief during my very serious day!

Carlos from Cypress, Texas writes:
Keep up this awesome work. I had not heard about your site until today. I have admired your dad since I saw him speak at the Republican convention in 1988, when I was right out of college. And then I saw Hanoi Hilton and new the hero that he is. Anyway, I just wanted to say, keep up this great work. It sounds like you are having a blast on the campaign trail and I hope that you are going to be bringing your incredible enthusiasm to the White House!

Dianna from Kinston, North Carolina wrote:
I'm a college junior and I just wanted to say I support your dad 100%. Your blog just reinforces the things I respect about him, especially family values. When I see the pictures of your family grilling out I am reminded of similar times among my own family (minus the press, of course... LOL). I think this blog is a great way to reach young voters. Not to shove politics down their throats, but to make them see that politics isn't always the cut-throat arena that most seem to think. Politicians are real people too, and I think it's important for people to see the "whole picture" as far as a candidate is concerned. John McCain is a real American hero and I'm voting on election day to make sure he's the next President of this country that I love so much! Great job with the blog. Thanks for the effort you put into it! :) I know you're proud to call Senator McCain "dad."

Carol from Oakwood, Georgia writes:
Meghan, you and the other Blogettes are doing a wonderful job. Please keep it up. Following the campaign via your blog lets all of us see the human side of your Dad and everyone who travels with him.

Jessica from Brooklyn, New York wrote:
Your blog is great! It brings a little fun to all the seriousness. My daughter loves it as well and I think that you have a great way of making politics accessible for younger people and prove that you don't have to be an automotan political child to be effective- not to mention the strong role model that you have become for young women...

Hannah from Austin, Texas writes:
Hope you guys are enjoying Texas! This blog is an awesome idea and definitely gives a cool insight into the campaign trail!

Ben from Blacksburg, Virginia wrote:
I'm not really a big fan of blogs but since reading about the McCain Blogette... I have kept up with it daily. As a political science major at Virginia Tech, this has given me a different (and more attractive) perspective on politics and the campaign trail. I love your work, keep it up!

R. Joseph from Tennessee writes:
You will definitely have to get a traveling job and continue your blog. I don't think I can exist without it. Not only is your blog just the most informative, most fun, but your photos are so GREAT. ...keep up the good work. I will definitely be voting for John McCain. Your parents are so cool.

Jess from Washington, DC wrote: I love the blog and the insider look at the campaign. I'm a hardcore Democrat who works in the biz, and I love the human element you bring to both the campaign and Republicans in general :) Also, I would like to steal your clothes. Best of luck!

Lisa from San Francisco, California writes:
LOVED your post on Cleveland and Cincinnati for many reasons: 1) No one else is covering the crazy look-a-like guy, who had clearly been waiting his whole life for that moment. 2) No one else is covering McCain hummus sightings. And I am SO looking forward to hearing about the McCain jello mold and the McCain butter sculpture that we all know you will encounter somewhere along the trail... You guys are making a very cool record of a unique moment in history - and making us laugh out loud along the way. Great work.
